Stop and call
Use recovery when a wheel is displaced, the tyre rubs heavily, the car sits on one corner, steering control changes sharply, a spring is broken or a severe warning instructs you to stop.
Ride height, noise and handling diagnosis
Clunks, uneven height, harsh ride, tyre wear and steering instability need a corner-by-corner inspection. We separate air-suspension, conventional chassis, wheel, tyre and alignment causes before defining the repair.

01
Safety triage
Suspension faults affect tyre clearance, steering response, braking stability and control. A warning message is one input, not the full safety assessment.
Use recovery when a wheel is displaced, the tyre rubs heavily, the car sits on one corner, steering control changes sharply, a spring is broken or a severe warning instructs you to stop.
A low corner, active ride-height warning, strong bounce, new impact noise or rapid tyre contact can worsen. Send photographs and describe whether height changes after restart.
Clunks, squeaks, uneven wear, drifting and mild height variation still need inspection before long trips or continued high-speed driving.
Note cold or hot state, parking duration, selected drive mode, load, road surface, speed, outside temperature and recent tyre or suspension work.
02
Corner map
Where the driver feels a symptom may not be where the fault originates. The car is inspected as a system before a single part is blamed.
Height
An air leak, valve path, line, strut or control issue may be involved on equipped vehicles. Parking surface and measured height matter. Repeatedly raising the vehicle does not locate the leak.
Noise
Control-arm bushes, ball joints, links, mounts, dampers, springs, steering parts or loose hardware can overlap. The exact direction and loading condition help isolate movement.
Control
Damping condition, tyre pressure, wheel size, drive mode, air-suspension control and mechanical binding are considered. A road test follows a safe physical inspection.
Tyres
Alignment numbers can move when bushes, joints, bearings, ride height, springs or impact damage are unresolved. Mechanical condition comes before final geometry.
Identify the fitted system
Mercedes model names cover several chassis and option combinations. VIN and fitted-system confirmation prevents an air-suspension assumption on a conventionally sprung vehicle, or the wrong part for an adaptive setup.
Modified ride height, non-standard wheels, spacers, previous conversions and aftermarket dampers must be disclosed. They can change geometry, tyre clearance, calibration and the parts list.
Inspection sequence
Good suspension diagnosis combines what the owner reports, what the vehicle records and what physical measurement shows.
Warning text, height after parking, speed, road surface, load and recent work define the test condition.
Pressure, wear, impact marks, clearance and visible component damage are checked before movement tests.
Physical play, ride height, pressure, voltage, scan data and controlled actuation are used as applicable.
Failed items, related consumables, axle-pair recommendations and alignment needs are shown separately.
Height, leaks, warning status, torque, geometry and road behaviour are reviewed in the appropriate order.
03
Component relationships
Related wear does not mean every component must be replaced. The estimate should show the evidence for each recommendation and what can be monitored.
| Area | Possible checks | Approval question |
|---|---|---|
| Arms, bushes and joints | Play, split rubber, loaded position, mounting and impact evidence | Which movement or damage confirms replacement? |
| Springs and dampers | Leakage, breakage, rebound, mount condition and side-to-side comparison | Is a pair recommended, and why? |
| Air struts, lines and compressor path | Leak retention, pressure generation, valve control, sensor input and voltage | Was the failed part isolated from the rest of the pneumatic path? |
| Wheel, tyre and bearing | Runout, pressure, wear, impact, clearance, noise and hub play | Is the symptom from suspension, rotating parts or both? |
| Alignment and calibration | Ride height, mechanical condition, steering angle and geometry values | Which setup or calibration step is included after repair? |

Estimate drivers
An intermittent leak, load-dependent noise or mixed mechanical and electronic symptom may need repeated checks. Ask whether the diagnostic allowance covers the first defined tests.
Model, axle, side, production date, suspension option and wheel package affect compatibility. The part source and warranty terms should be named.
Seized fasteners, access, mounts, seals, lines, fluids, axle-pair work, wheel alignment and calibration can change the complete scope.
A pothole or collision can affect the wheel, tyre, bearing, steering and body clearance. Each confirmed issue should be priced separately.
Non-standard ride height, wheels or conversions may require additional compatibility checks and can limit the result achievable with factory geometry targets.
A meaningful handover may include settled height, leak recheck, road test, alignment printout or warning-status review depending on the job.
Do not approve a generic package that hides the failed corner, the measured finding or the part source. Ask for a revised estimate when dismantling reveals material additional work.
A short noise recording can help when made by a passenger or while the car is safely stationary. Do not hold a phone while driving or create repeated impacts to capture the sound. Note whether it occurs once, repeats with wheel rotation or follows every bump because each pattern supports a different first check.

05
Driving-condition matrix
Short descriptions such as noise or bad suspension are not enough. Record the road input, speed, steering position, braking state and whether the vehicle is cold or warmed up.
A repeatable single knock can come from joint clearance, a link, mount, bush, loose fastener, brake hardware or steering movement. The affected corner is loaded and checked in the direction that matches the road input. Replacing a damper because the noise is near it is not enough evidence. The estimate should name the observed play, contact or failed mounting.
Damping, spring support, air-suspension control, tyre pressure and vehicle load are considered. A safe road test can compare front and rear response, but physical inspection comes first. If one damper is leaking, the workshop should explain whether an axle-pair recommendation is based on balance, measured condition or manufacturer guidance for the fitted setup.
Top mounts, springs, joints, steering parts, tyre contact and body clearance can load differently while turning. The car may need to be inspected with weight on the wheels as well as raised. Mention wheel spacers, altered ride height and recent alignment because these can change clearance without proving the cause.
Parking duration and level-ground measurements help identify whether the loss is isolated to one corner, one axle or the system. Compressor operation after restart does not prove the compressor is the source. A leak can make a working compressor run more often. Pressure retention, valve routing, lines, struts and control data are evaluated together.
Post-repair monitoring Recheck ride height on the same level surface, listen for the original noise, watch tyre clearance and retain any alignment record. If a warning returns, photograph it before restarting. Report the mileage, outside temperature and conditions so the workshop can compare the new event with the original complaint.
06
Result verification
Ride height, tyre clearance, visible leaks, fastener completion and underbody fitment are checked before the vehicle moves. On air suspension, the appropriate settling or retention period may also matter.
The invoice should state whether the original warning is absent, whether stored history remains and whether an official-channel function is still required. Clearing a message alone is not a repair result.
Alignment follows correction of ride height and mechanical movement. Keep the printout when provided and ask which values were adjusted or remained limited by tyre, impact or modification condition.
The final road check should target the original bump, steering or speed condition without unsafe testing. A different noise or vibration is recorded separately instead of being folded into the original job.
Ask whether any new component needs a later torque, height, leak or alignment recheck. Record the mileage at handover and the conditions under which the result was verified. If the repair was staged, the invoice should show what remains, its priority and whether continued driving changes the risk.
Tyre wear does not reverse after suspension repair. Existing uneven wear can continue to create noise or pull even when geometry is corrected. The handover should explain whether tyre replacement, rotation or monitoring is recommended and why. This prevents an old tyre pattern from being mistaken for immediate failure of the completed suspension work.
One side or both sides
Some suspension components are commonly considered by axle pair because matched damping, spring support or wear can affect balanced behaviour. Other items can be replaced at one confirmed corner when the opposite side remains within condition and the fitted system permits it. The workshop should show why the recommendation is single-side, pair, axle or full-system work.
Vehicle mileage alone does not prove equal failure, and a visible defect on one side does not prove the other is satisfactory. Compare leakage, play, height, rebound, mounting and tyre condition. If the owner approves only the failed side, record any observation on the opposite side and the condition that should trigger a recheck.
Owner questions
On an air-suspension vehicle, leakage or control issues may be involved. The affected corner, parking duration, surface and measured height help locate the path. Conventional spring or structural faults require a different inspection.
Only after tyre pressure, wheel condition, ride height, joints, bushes, springs and bearings are satisfactory. Alignment cannot compensate for mechanical movement.
Some dampers, springs or wear items may be recommended by axle pair for balanced performance. The reason should be explained for the fitted system and measured condition.
No. Leaks, voltage, sensors, valves, wiring, control and pressure generation can produce related warnings. Testing should isolate the fault before replacement.
Park on level ground, keep a safe distance, photograph all four corners and note how long the car has been parked. Do not crawl under an unsupported vehicle.
Three useful cost examples
These planning examples show how the suspension type, axle, parts choice and alignment affect the total. They are not claims about completed customer vehicles. Final prices depend on inspection, measured wear and the written quote.
