Fuel and starting
Old fuel, a discharged battery, poor grounds, dry connectors or repeated short running can create starting and driveability complaints. Do not assume that a no-start after storage needs only a battery. Record cranking speed, pump sound, warning behaviour and fuel age where known.
Cooling and hoses
Check coolant level only when safe, then inspect accessible hoses, clamps, cap, fan operation and visible leakage. A car that remained stationary may not reveal a temperature problem until traffic, a longer road test or higher load. The test plan should increase load gradually.
Tyres and brakes
Flat spotting, age cracking, pressure loss, surface corrosion and a sticking brake can appear after storage. Confirm tyre date and condition, wheel security, pedal feel and free wheel rotation before treating vibration as an alignment issue.
Seals and fluid loss
Engine, gearbox, differential, clutch and brake leaks should be identified by source and fluid, not grouped as an “old car leak.” Clean evidence, operating temperature and repeat inspection may be needed to separate residue from an active leak.
Road-test boundary
A low, open sports car should not be road-tested until steering, tyres, brakes, wheel security, visible suspension and fluid risks have passed a first check. The test should reproduce the complaint without requiring unsafe speed or public-road behaviour.
Baseline record
After storage or purchase, record fluid condition, battery and charging results, tyre information, brake measurements, visible joints, leaks and current setup. This becomes a useful reference for later maintenance without implying that every item must be replaced immediately.
