Paint inspection, correction and gloss care
The right polish depends on the paint, defect depth, previous repairs and finish type. We inspect first, test a small area and agree how much correction is sensible before the whole car is polished.

The short answer
Car polishing refines eligible defects in the paint surface and improves clarity and gloss. Depending on the product and pad, it may remove oxidation, haze, fine wash marks, light water spotting and shallow scratches within the clear coat. A heavier correction step uses more cut than a finishing polish. Both require control because the clear coat is a limited paint layer.
Polishing cannot replace missing paint, close a chip, reshape a dent or remove a scratch that has passed through the clear coat into colour, primer or metal. It also cannot restore a failed clear coat that is peeling or delaminating. Those conditions belong to paint or body repair. A glossy panel can look better after correction, yet the service must preserve enough coating for future exposure and maintenance.

Four services with different jobs
Using the terms interchangeably creates the wrong expectation. Each stage has a separate purpose.

The test area sets the honest target
The car is first cleaned enough to distinguish contamination from damage. Under inspection lighting, the technician looks for wash marring, rotary trails, holograms, oxidation, etched spots, sanding marks, isolated scratches, stone chips, repaint edges and signs of clear-coat failure. Defects can look very different on black paint, metallic colours and light solid colours, so the lighting must reveal the surface rather than flatter it.
Paint thickness readings can help compare panels and identify unusual variation, but a reading is not a guarantee of the remaining clear-coat depth. Factory coatings, repainted panels, filler, curved edges and instrument limits affect interpretation. Edges, raised body lines and previously repaired areas receive additional caution because they may have less material or unknown history.
A test section shows how the selected pad and polish affect the defect and finish. If a mild combination produces a useful result, there is no reason to begin with unnecessary cut. If a scratch remains after a safe improvement, the customer can choose to accept it or route the panel to paint repair instead of chasing total removal.

A fingernail test can provide a rough clue but is not a complete diagnosis. Panel history, inspection lighting, coating measurements and the response to a test area provide better evidence. If a visible mark sits across a dent, the panel shape must be assessed first. Eligible dents may be handled with paintless dent removal; cracked paint or stretched metal may require body repair before polishing.
Clean, test, correct and protect
Photograph paint condition, trim, chips, repaired panels, film edges and the defects the customer wants addressed.
Wash and decontaminate as required. Dirt must not be trapped beneath a pad or mistaken for a paint defect.
Review paint type and thickness variation, then protect sensitive trim, edges, badges, vents and adjacent surfaces.
Use a small area to choose the least aggressive product and pad that reaches the agreed improvement.
Work panel by panel, remove residue, inspect under useful light and apply the approved protection after preparation.
Choose the correction target by condition
The names describe goals, not guaranteed defect-removal percentages.
Suitable when the customer wants fresher gloss and reduced light marring without pursuing every isolated scratch. A finishing polish may be enough after a test.
May combine compounding and polishing where coating condition and thickness allow it. The aim and remaining defects are agreed before the full vehicle is completed.
Chips, cracks, deep scratches, peeling clear coat and damaged panels need a separate body or paint decision. Polishing follows only when the surface is ready.
A new or recently repainted panel also needs product-specific curing information before aggressive finishing, waxing or ceramic coating. The paint supplier and refinishing process determine when later products can be applied. A fixed waiting period copied from another paint system is not reliable.
Some surfaces must not be treated like gloss paint
Matte and satin paint use a controlled low-gloss appearance. Conventional polishing can create shiny patches and permanently change the finish, so the vehicle must be identified before machine work. Cleaning and repair products need to be compatible with that surface.
Vinyl wrap and paint protection film sit above the paint. Their top coats, age, edges, previous products and damage determine whether a light finishing process is appropriate. A scratch in film is not automatically a scratch in the paint underneath, and lifting an edge can turn a small cosmetic request into a replacement decision.
Existing ceramic coatings can change polishing and decontamination. Correction usually removes or weakens the coating in the worked area, which means protection may need to be reapplied. The customer should disclose the product and installation history if known.
Correction exposes the finish to its next environment
Freshly polished paint should be wiped and inspected before a wax, sealant or coating is selected. The protection changes maintenance and durability, but it does not make the paint scratch-proof. Washing technique, parking, dust, water quality and later chemicals still affect the finish.
The chosen product should match the paint or film, the customer’s maintenance routine and any curing restrictions. We state the applied product and basic aftercare at handover rather than hiding it inside a vague polishing package.

Condition and target set the estimate
A useful quote identifies the preparation, correction stages, local repair limits and protection. Vehicle size alone is not enough.
Contamination, oxidation, swirl density, deeper isolated marks and clear-coat failure change the route.
Panel size, complex curves, vents, badges, trim, roof height and low-clearance handling affect working time.
Gloss enhancement, selected defect improvement and multi-stage correction have different preparation and inspection needs.
Wax, sealant and ceramic coating use different products, preparation, curing and aftercare.
Photography alone can support an initial discussion, but lighting can hide or exaggerate defects. The final quote follows inspection and an agreed test area where necessary. The approved quote identifies the correction target, excluded defects, protection step and any written service terms for the actual vehicle.
Inspect the result in honest light
View the vehicle under the same useful inspection light used to set the target, then in normal ambient light. Confirm which defects improved, which remain, which panels were not corrected and what protection was applied. Remaining chips and deep scratches should not be hidden with temporary filler products and presented as permanent removal.
Inspect trim, badges, edges, film and rubber for residue. Confirm that doors, bonnet and boot lid are closed correctly and that no masking remains. If a body-shop issue was found during polishing, it should be documented as a separate observation.
Aftercare should state when the car can be washed, which products to avoid and how to maintain the chosen wax, sealant or coating. For routine cleaning and interior care, use the dedicated detailing scope instead of assuming every future wash includes correction.

The final correction plan comes from paint inspection and a test area.
