Supercar access matters
Dry-sump service, undertrays, and oil-level accuracy
McLaren engines use specialized lubrication layouts designed for high acceleration, braking, cornering, and heat. Oil can be distributed through the reservoir, engine, coolers, turbocharger circuits, and lines rather than resting in one conventional sump. Draining from the wrong point or checking at the wrong temperature can leave old oil behind or produce an inaccurate level.
Large flat undertrays improve airflow but add service steps. Removing them without bending panels, damaging fasteners, or scratching finished surfaces takes controlled lift access and organized hardware handling. The panels also hide small leaks. We inspect the accessible areas while they are removed, then refit them in the correct position without using impact tools where controlled torque is required.
Overfilling is not protection. It can contribute to aeration, crankcase ventilation problems, smoke, leaks, and incorrect readings. Underfilling can reduce the available reserve under load. We follow the applicable warm-up, settling, and electronic-level procedure, then record the final check rather than relying only on the amount poured into the system.
